We collaborate with our clients; listening to their vision, exploring options and developing creative solutions for the outdoor spaces they inhabit. Our goal is to translate our client’s dreams, through a balance of art, science, and nature, into memorable places for living, learning, and growing.

About Jay Olmsted

About Jay Olmsted

Jay Olmsted is president and founder of Olmsted Design. Since earning his master’s degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in 1993, he has practiced as a landscape architect on projects in many parts of the country and abroad with such firms as Sasaki Associates and Hart Howerton. Along with his daytime positions, he developed his own private practice in the evenings serving residential, municipal and institutional clients. With the growth of that practice, he formed Olmsted Design in 2019 to devote all of his energy into serving his own clients. Mr. Olmsted’s 30 years of experience ranges in scale from complex urban developments to compact residential properties, from strategic land planning to detailed design, and as a leader of large development teams to a sole practitioner. His approach to people and the environments he works in centers around his love of the outdoors and the people who use and enjoy the places he creates.

What’s In a Name

What’s In a Name

Mr. Olmsted is descended from a renown lineage in the Landscape Architecture profession. Fredrick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) was the father of the profession in America and created such notable places as Central Park and Prospect Park in New York, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC and our own Boston Parks System. He foresaw the impact that urbanization would have on Americans and preemptively worked to preserve natural places for everyone. He was a renaissance man before he founded this profession, traveling through the southern slave states recording his observations of how the system of slavery restricted rather than expanded the southern economy, lead the Sanitary Commission during the American Civil War (which was the precursor to the Red Cross), and managed a gold mine near Yosemite Valley and became a pioneering advocate for the preservation of Yosemite Valley and the National Parks.
